DVS Requirements

As a business in the UK, getting your products or your supplies from A to B can be a huge part of your operations. In order for you to keep your business running smoothly and your customers happy, you need to make sure that your logistics are well-run.

This is why it’s important to understand the weight limits and restrictions of standard UK pallets. Here, we’ll take a look at the heaviest weight you can put on a pallet, safe working load (SWL) of a pallet and what can affect the weight limit to help you ensure that you’re always operating efficiently.

The Weight Limits of Standard UK Pallets

To help you plan and arrange your shipping and logistics, understanding the weight limits of UK standard pallets is vital. It will enable you to keep your weight loads under control and plan for the efficient delivery of goods.

The UK standard pallet weight limits are as follows:

  • Full Pallet: A maximum load of 1,200 kg, based on 1200 x 1000 x 2200mm dimensions. While some pallets can support that weight, pallet networks and couriers (especially tail-lift deliveries) typically limit loads to 1000kg, including the pallet weight, for safety and lifting equipment constraints.
  • Half Pallet: A maximum load of 500kg, based on 1200 x 1000 x 1200mm dimensions
  • Quarter Pallet: A maximum load of 250kg, based on 1200 x 1000 x 800mm dimensions
  • Light Pallet: A maximum load of 750kg, based on 1200 x 1000 x 2200mm dimensions

The Safe Working Load (SWL) of a Pallet

When planning your logistics, it’s key to be aware of the safe working load (SWL) of your pallets. This refers to the maximum weight that the pallet could possibly support without breaking or causing any damage.

As outlined above, the heaviest weight on a pallet refers to the SWL and total amount of weight it can carry without the risk of collapse. As you’re calculating your pallets, you’ll want to ensure that you factor in all elements of the load.

What Affects the Weight Limit?

In order to make sure that you’re under the weight limit, it’s important to bear in mind everything that the pallet will be carrying. This refers to the products themselves, along with any boxes, packaging, wrapping, or strapping.

It’s essential that you do not go over the weight limit to ensure the safe delivery of your products. Going over the maximum load could mean potentially causing damage to the goods you’re transporting.
