As one of the most essential tools found in warehouses, it is extremely useful information to know how to use a pallet jack. An alternative choice to forklifts, they are cheaper, easier to operate and safer to use instead of manual labour.
Here is a guide on what pallet jacks are, the different types and how to use them.
What is a Pallet Jack?
A pallet jack, also known as a pallet truck, hand pallet jack or a pallet mover, is a piece of equipment used to lift, move and transport pallets. This includes loading, unloading and storing pallets which are all important processes within warehouse management.
Different Types of Pallet Jacks
There are 2 different types of pallet jacks: manual pallet jacks and electric pallet trucks. The main difference is that a manual pallet jack uses physical force to move it whereas an electric jack uses battery power.
Following on from this, because electric models are power operated, they require accreditations before operating. Under Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER), staff are required to receive sufficient training which leads to a certification. These may have an expiry date, so must be kept up to date in order to comply.
The choice between the 2 depends on the size and the scope of a warehouse. If you have a large, high-volume business, electric pallet jacks would be recommended as they cut down on labour. However, for smaller warehouses, manual pallet jacks would be a better option.
Parts of a Manual Pallet Truck
The construction of a pallet truck is quite simple, but it’s important to become familiar before starting to use it. It consists of:
- Handle: This is what is used to steer the pallet truck as well as raising the pallet truck forks.
- Control Lever or Panel: A small bar located on the handle that can be moved up, down and into a neutral position or a control panel on the handle with buttons to control the forks and the truck.
- Hydraulic Pump: Located at the base of the handle, this is what is used to raise and lower the forks.
- Forks: Two long forks that perfectly fit inside universal pallets so they can be lifted.
- Steer Wheels: There are normally 2 large steer wheels below the handlebar which are used to manoeuvre the truck.
- Load Wheels: Normally located underneath the forks to help manoeuvre them into place.
How to Operate a Manual Pallet Jack
Now you know all about pallet jacks, here is how to use a manual one.
1. Move the Truck Into Position & Use the Lever
Push the pallet truck over to the pallet you would like to move and operate the control lever. As mentioned above, the lever has 3 positions and it is automatically in the neutral position. When you move the lever up and pump it towards you, it will activate the hydraulic pump and lower the forks.
2. Slide the Forks Into the Pallet
Make sure the forks line up with the pallet and the pallet is stable. Slide the forks underneath the pallet and adjust the forks with the lever, if necessary. Remember to push the forks all the way through.
3. Raise the Pallet
Once you’re in position, move the control lever down and pump it towards you to lift the pallet off the ground. Ensure the forks are completely off the ground so they don’t drag, but not too high so the pallet is unstable. Then, move the lever back into the neutral position.
4. Transport the Pallet
Now, it’s time to move your pallet! Use the handle and the wheels to direct your pallet to where you need it to go. We recommend pushing the pallet truck rather than pulling it, unless it is easier to do so to get it into the right position.
5. Unload the Pallet
Once you have reached your location, slowly lower the forks by moving the lever up and pumping it, always monitoring the load to make sure it’s stable. When it’s safely on the ground, move the lever back into the neutral position and remove the forks from beneath the pallet.
6. Store the Pallet Truck
Find a secure location to store the pallet once you’ve finished using it and make sure the forks are lowered to the ground.
How to Operate an Electric Pallet Jack
Operating an electric pallet jack is very similar to a manual pallet jack, with some slight differences:
- As this type of pallet truck will normally be on charge before you use it, the first thing to do is unplug it and store away the cord.
- These have a control panel rather than a control lever which are used to move the truck itself as well as the forks.
- Once you’ve finished with the truck, place it back into its secure location and plug it back in to charge.
Pallet Jack Safety Guidelines
Every type of machinery, even those as small as pallet jacks, need to be operated safely to avoid any mistakes or issues. This includes:
Assess the Pallet Truck Before Every Use
Before operating the truck, you need to make sure that everything appears to be functional and safe. This includes taking a look at the tyres, forks, and charging cords to guarantee everything is in the best condition and there is no damage or obstructions.
Create a Clear Path
You know where your pallets are, so as you walk from there to your pallet truck, make sure the route is clear of all obstacles and the ground surface is as flat as possible.
Take Your Time
As busy as it gets, it’s always better to move slowly and carefully rather than rushing. Injuries are more likely to occur when this happens as you will be less stable.
Keep Your Forks in the Right Position
The general rule of thumb when you’re moving your truck without a pallet is to keep the forks up so they don’t make contact with the floor. When you’re storing your truck, always keep the forks down as they are a tripping hazard.
Don’t Exceed Load Capacity
Make sure you’re aware of your pallet truck’s load capacity as it’s important not to exceed it. This may cause damage to the equipment as well as the pallet and the operator.
